For best results a strong semi-dry mortar mix is recommended (with sufficient water content to bind but not so much as to stain the paving when introduced). Pointing is best completed as laying work progresses and should be carried out during dry spells of weather and sufficient pointing mortar should be mixed to be used within 30-45 minutes (less in hot weather conditions). After this time it may become too dry to bond. If spaces between paving are filled with sand, modified sand or decorative stone, moisture may be held in the joints and water may penetrate the sub-base for excessive periods of time, resulting in the possible occurrence of dark staining on the top surface or around the edges of the paving.
StoneFlair’s manufactured products are reconstructed stone and the paving range is primarily intended for domestic landscape use. The manufacturer cannot accept any liability in respect of products being used for any inappropriate purpose.
Although very strong and durable, Vale Paving is a budget utility paving and can portray colour variation and scratch marks within each face. We would therefore strongly recommend that it is not used for feature patios.
Sometimes dark patches appear on the surface of concrete paving slabs. It is caused by the movement of the moisture content within the paving slab drying the surface at different rates. Given time and natural weathering the darker patches tend to tone down and become less apparent.
Efflorescence appears on concrete paving products as white patches or a lightening of the surface colour, but seems to disappear when wet. It is formed by a normal chemical reaction between cement and water which causes calcium hydroxide (lime) to migrate through damp concrete to the paving surface and then react with carbon dioxide in the atmosphere resulting in a deposit of calcium carbonate crystals. Efflorescence is very unpredictable in its occurrence but is more prevalent in winter when concrete becomes wet and dries more slowly. Although there are cleaners available, efflorescence is a natural phenomenon and will generally disappear with the natural weathering process and the passage of time.
Some natural stone paving units may contain a small iron content and when in contact with water can oxidise causing rust marks to the surface of the paving. There are proprietary brand cleaners on the market especially formulated for rust removal.
For advice on the removal of stains such as iron pyrites, algae, oil etc please contact our sales office.
Many products within our range are heavy. It is recommended that items over 25kg or those that are awkward in shape should be handled by more than one person, or suitable lifting equipment is used. It is suggested that work gloves are used to prevent abrasion to hands and lime burns from wet mortar. Eye protection (safety goggles) should also be used when cutting with either chisels or rotary disc cutters, also suitable respiratory protection (dust mask) should be used to avoid dust inhalation when using high speed cutters.
All dimensions quoted in this brochure are nominal and are subject to manufacturing tolerances and actual sizes will vary as products are designed to replicate natural stone which features riven profiles and irregular fettled edges. Our policy is one of continued improvement, innovation and development and as such we reserve the right to change specification without notice.
